Electric Hot Water

Electric hot water systems can be storage, electric assisted or instant systems.

Electric storage systems heat the water in the tank and as the hot water is drawn out from the tank, it is replaced with cold water, which triggers the reheating process. Storage tanks under 100 litres are powered continuously while tanks over 100 litres have the option of off-peak electricity which is cheaper and will heat up at night time. Electric heated storage tanks are relatively cheap to buy and install, but is usually the most expensive to run. Instant electric hot water systems simply heat the water as it is required and require 3 phase electrical connection.

Safeguard Plumbers can provide you with expert advice and help you decide on the best system for you.

Solar Hot Water Heaters

Solar hot water systems use roof mount solar collectors to absorb energy from the sun, which is then used to heat water that flows into a storage tank.

Solar hot water systems can provide you with free hot water, however they are sun-dependent and on cloudy days this system may experience little to no solar heated water. This is why solar hot water systems are designed with a water heating booster that is powered by electricity or gas and will turn on when the system senses that there is not enough hot water in the storage tank.

It is best to seek expert advice to help you decide on whether a solar water heater is best for you and Safeguard Plumbers are here to help.

Gas Hot Water Heater

Natural gas water heaters generally create far fewer greenhouse gas emissions than electric powered hot water systems. This is because natural gas burns more efficiently than the coal burnt to generate the electricity, this is shown in the energy efficient star rating. Gas hot water can be sectioned into storage or instantaneous systems with either gas pilot light or electric ignition.

Electric ignition instantaneous systems are more economical because they only heat the water that is required however they need a high gas flow and may need the installation of larger gas pipes.

Safeguard Plumbers can help you install a gas hot water system and assist with any gas fittings, please get in touch to find out more.

Hot Water System Repairs

Hot water systems require regular maintenance to ensure they work efficiently and have a long lifespan. Storage tanks should have several litres of water drained annually from the pressure relief valve. This is done by lifting up on the relief valve lever, holding for 5 seconds and then allowing the lever to snap back into place. The valve should allow a discharge of water into the drainpipe. This is to test the correct operation of the valve, flush out any sediment that has built-up which will minimise corrosion and improve the efficiency that the system heats your water. If the valve does not discharge any water or continues to run water once the lever is reset the valve will likely need replacing. It is also important to check the temperature to which your hot water system is heating the water to. By lowering the temperature setting you can lower the power bill and reduce the risk of scalding.

Safeguard Plumbers can investigate your situation and offer the best solution to your problem. It may be as simple as replacing a valve, adjusting the temperature setting and as involved as replacing the hot water unit.

Hot Water Installation

Hot water is an essential service in our homes, however it is important to get the right system to match your needs. Installing a new hot water system is an important investment because if done correctly these systems will run for decades. The ongoing cost of generating hot water can account for over 25% of your energy usage, so it is important to get a hot water system that provides a cost effective long-term solution. Some common factors that we need to understand are:

  • Is it for domestic, commercial or industrial use?
  • Do you want an electric, gas, solar powered or heat pump?
  • If you want solar powered, is your property able to accommodate a solar powered hot water system?
  • Do you want a stored or instant hot water service?
  • What are your hot water requirements? eg How many people are using the service?

Safeguard Plumbers are more than happy to help determine the installation that is best for you.

Electric ignition instantaneous systems are more economical because they only heat the water that is required however they need a high gas flow and may need the installation of larger gas pipes.
